About the Book
In The Rabbi’s Necktie: Ties to Torah and Tradition, Rabbi Sean Gorman finds Torah in an unexpected place: the neckties he wears. A tie covered in frogs recalls the plagues of Egypt. A train tie evokes Ezekiel’s chariot. A pattern of stars points toward creation, the roof of a sukkah, or the promise made to Abraham. From the weekly Torah portion to Shabbat and the festivals, each tie opens a door to text, tradition, memory, humor, and meaning. With warmth, scholarship, and an unabashed appreciation for a good pun, Rav Sean connects ancient words to everyday life, making familiar texts feel fresh and inviting. Accessible to longtime students of Torah, synagogue goers, and readers curious about Jewish tradition, The Rabbi’s Necktie offers a thoughtful and engaging way to discover new meaning in familiar texts and to find the sacred in unexpected places.

about THE AUTHOR

RABBI SEAN GORMAN, known as Rav Sean, received rabbinical ordination from the Jewish Theological Seminary in 1998. He began his rabbinate at Pearl Harbor, serving four and a half years as a chaplain in the United States Navy before entering civilian rabbinic life. He has since served congregations in New York and Toronto and remains connected to the Navy Reserve. His interests include parshanut (biblical commentary) and ta'amei ha-mikra (cantillation). He is married to Rabbi Jennifer Gorman, Rav Jen. Together, they have three adult children and two cats. Rav Sean also owns three bicycles and hopes someday to follow the women's Tour de France, ideally ending each day at a café with coffee, a pain au chocolat, and a view of the peloton passing by.
